The final due date for this assignment is January 18th, 2017, 11:59PM HOL time. Please send all assignments to [email protected] with the subject line "HW1 - [Your HOL ID]" for homework and "EC1 - [Your HOL ID]" for the extra credit. They must be sent separately! So if I were sending mine in, they would say "HW1 - iv823" and "EC1 -iv823" in the subject line. Please also include your name, house, and HOL ID at the top of your e-mail. I need this info to give you your hard-earned points, so double check that it's there! I will NOT accept attachments - please send your entire assignment in the body of the e-mail, or else I won't grade it. If you have any questions or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to send me a HOL message (my ID is iv823) or find me on IRC. I am always happy to help! Failure to format the assignments correctly (i.e., as outlined above) will result in a warning the first time, and a 2 point penalty for subsequent issues!

Option 1) What's Your Take?
Choose ONE of the topics below and discuss your opinion on it! You don't have to answer all of the questions in the prompt you choose - they're mostly there to help you reach 150 words if you're stuck! (150 words minimum)
- Do you think the definition of "dark arts" is appropriate, or do you think it's unfair to group relatively harmless jinxes with horrible curses under one "umbrella term"? Why? What definition of the dark arts would you suggest, or what title/category would you give to the more minor magic?
- Do you believe there is sufficient evidence to support the theory that the Dark Arts draw their power from harming someone's soul? Why or why not? Do you have any additional evidence or counter-evidence?
- Do you have your own theory for why injuries caused by dark magic never fully heal, or do you agree with mine? (If you agree with mine, expand upon it and tell me why you agree or what additions you might make to it).
- Are you someone who might frequent Knockturn Alley? What might you buy there/hope to find there, or how would you like to spend your time? Do you think it's fair that people in Knockturn Alley are sometimes looked down on or avoided?
Option 2) Get Creative!
Choose ONE of the options below and draw a picture/create a graphic/make any other kind of artistic representation of the subject. Points will be given for EFFORT and CREATIVITY - don't fret about the quality!
- Severus Snape describes the Dark arts as a many-headed monster that sprouts more heads each time a neck is severed. This is like the Lernaean Hydra from Greek Mythology! Draw/graphic/whatever me a picture of the "Dark Arts Hydra"!
- This class could use a textbook! There are very few books in existence that cover the topic of the Dark Arts. You can create a cover for one of them, or you can create a cover for an entirely new textbook for this class.
- What do you think Knockturn Alley looks like? Create an image of Knockturn Alley - whether it be the whole Alley, one shop in the Alley, or something you bought on a trip there! They can be ones we know about from the books/movies or new things entirely - it's up to you!
